TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
Happy Sunday!
When MAPS members are not volunteering, working, or shadowing, they are studying hard and studying smart! This study social consisted of us working very hard as well as sharing professor horror stories (get as many opinions as you can on professors from upperclassmen before you register). Midterms can be a stressful time, so make sure you set aside some time for self-care. Mental health comes first, and remember that one bad test score does not define your entire career. Contact me or any other officers if you need advice on study tips, spring registration, or anything in general! See y'all later, Helen :)

Hey MAPS!
This is Momo! Thank you to Aggieland Pets with a Purpose (APWAP) for bringing her out! Momo is a therapy dog in training and she loves being pet and getting butt massages. Thank you to our members that came out and showed her some love. We loved spending time with her and learning about her. If you are interested in volunteering with this non-profit organization, click the link above for more info! See y'all later, Helen Howdy, my fellow pre-health students!!
If you attended the dinner at the College of Medicine, I'm sure you learned some valuable information! The panel consisted of an oncology nurse, OB/GYN, hand surgeon, pharmacist, and an inpatient care tech. Some of the topics they discussed were: -how being a minority has helped them in their daily roles as physicians -working in health care is a team effort -taking as many opportunities as you can -maintaining relationships with people who help you along the way -the increasing incidence of encountering undocumented immigrants, who struggle with language barrier and lack of health insurance Open dialogue about all of these topics is essential to making your journey an enlightening and successful one! Seize any opportunity which may help you become who you aspire to be. See y'all at the next event, Helen Happy Saturday!!
Name a better way to start your Saturday than volunteering at the Brazos Valley Food Bank. You can't? That's because there's nothing better than selfless service! At the Food Bank, we sort through items that HEB has donated. We sort the items into drinks, snacks, breakfast items, dairy, soup, tissue, etc. In collaboration with a few other organizations, we assembled 2,460 meals in just 2 hours!! This is one of my favorite volunteer events with MAPS and I hope to see more of you at the next one! Warm wishes, Helen Huang :) Howdy!!
I hope you all had a great time at our 2nd meeting/Mentor-Mentee Match Night!! It's always a joy seeing all the smiling faces walk into the room! I hope you got to know your mentor, gained some knowledge, and had fun during the game! A mentor-mentee relationship in any aspect of life is extremely valuable as it provides opportunities for growth, professional development, and friendship! Throughout life, I hope you meet lots of people who can offer mentorship. Also, I hope one day you yourself can mentor people! I received my MAPS mentor, Sara Yasrebi (now M2, pictured below: 3rd down on the left) last year. She has helped me tremendously in so many ways. From MCAT study tips to physician shadowing recommendations, her advice has brought so many opportunities to my attention. Please keep in touch with your mentor, because this is an insanely rare opportunity to be able to receive advice about medical school/nursing school directly from the respective students! Warm wishes, Helen Huang HOWDY!!
Thank you all for attending our first general meeting of the semester! In case you missed it: 1) A Kaplan student ambassador gave a talk about available courses for graduate school entrance exam prep. Kaplan offers prep courses for the MCAT, GRE, DAT, PCAT, and more! Common misconception: "I don't need to start studying until a few months before my exam." IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY TO START STUDYING!! 2) Our advisor, Dr. Kraft, gave an enlightening and informative lecture about metacognitive strategies for enhancing the way we learn. Ask yourself if you are studying the material or actually learning/understanding it. 3) The officers introduced themselves and talked about the active membership requirements. 4) We ended with a fun game of bingo! Each bingo card had 2 fun facts about each officer. The first to get a bingo won a few points (We know you guys love points)! Please let us know if you have any questions! Thanks and gig 'em, Helen |
